בחכמת ישראל הכוללת תתפוס את מקומה הראוי הארכאולוגיה היהודית, שכל כיבושיה מעכשווים את עברנו ומממשים את רציפותנו ההיסטורית בארץ. כך אמר דוד בן-גוריון, ראש ממשלתה הראשון של מדינת ישראל, בשנת 1950. מעמדה המיוחס של הארכאולוגיה, ככלי לחשיפת עברה המפואר של הארץ, בא לידי ביטוי במטבעות ושטרי כסף, בכנסים ואלבומי תמונות, ביצירות אמנות וכרזות תעמולה, בדמויות מנהיגות ובחובבים נלהבים. עם השנים הלך מעמד זה והשתנה. מאבקים מרים מול החרדים, גילויים מעוררי מחלוקת שנתגלו בחפירות, ובעיקר השינוי באתוס הלאומי הביאו לצד פריחת הארכאולוגיה כתחום אקדמי גם לנטייה להסתגר בתחומי האקדמיה. קובץ מאמרים זה מלווה את הדרמה של הארכאולוגיה בארץ ישראל מאז ראשית המאה ה-20 ועד ימינו. מקובצים בו מאמריהם של חוקרים מתחומים שונים. הספר בוחן את המסלול שעבר התחום, מסמן נתיבים אפשריים להמשך ומזמין את הציבור בארץ לדיון בשאלות יסוד של מדע ולאומיות, מחקר ואמונה, עבר והווה.
